A ligament of vertebral column is a skeletal ligament [ligamentum skeletale ] which concerns the vertebral column [columna vertebralis ].

The ligaments of vertebral column These ligaments belongs to 3 categories: 1) the ligaments of the atlantoaxial joint; 2) the longitudinal ligaments; 3) the ligaments of the intervertebral syndesmoses. The ligaments of the atlantooccipital joints are considered as cranial ligaments.Quantitatively, there are 146 ligaments of vertebral column. The partition is 4 longitudinal ligaments, 9 ligaments of the atlantoaxial joint and 133 ligaments of the intervertebral syndesmoses: the detail is 23 interspinous ligaments, 2 x 24 yellow ligaments, 2 x 22 intertransverse ligaments and 18 supraspinous ligaments.Attention must be given to the supraspinous ligament. It is in fact a unique entity extending from C7 to the sacrum. But many authors considers it is made of intervertebral segments also named ligaments. For this reason, each segment is represented in the taxonomic hierarchy of ligaments, and not under segments of ligament! |
